Ich hoere täglich Podcasts - meist auf dem Weg zur Arbeit. Immer mal wieder werde ich gefragt, was ich denn da so höre:

Redmine 2 on Fedora 17

Ruby on Rails is messy to deploy. Rails developers don't care much for backward compatibility and so any complex rails application needs a specific set of gems - often at exactly the version that the $upstream authors developed against. Because of this many upstream projects are shipping either a complete rails stack or are reverting to bundler to get the stack their app needs. This all reminds me of what java apps used to be like.

Fedora @ CLT 2012

I'm spending this beautiful spring weekend at the Chemnitzer Linux Tage. It's the ninth time I'm visiting the event - fourth or fifth for as a fedora ambassador helping out with the fedora booth. This years CLT is as well organized as it was in previous years.

OpenRheinRuhr in Oberhausen this weekend

I'll be spending my time at the OpenRheinRuhr this coming weekend (November 12 and 13). For the third year in a row I'm involved in organizing the event and for the third time in a row we've managed to attract a fair number of interesting projects and talks. The ORR Website has all the details (in german).

Backing up your Mac OS Lion machine to a Fedora server

Using Apples Time Machine to back up my work macbook has been on my todo-list for quite a while. This was pretty easy in the pre-lion days and only required a samba or nfs-server available to the mac. Apple has changed this - now it takes an appletalk share to do the backup. I'm sure that the decision to no longer support other protocols has been made only on technical grounds and not to increase sales of apples own time-capsule.

Here are the steps to get things to work:

CLT 2011

This past weekend marked the 10th edition of the Chemnitz Linux Days - this year must have been my 7th or 8th year straight visiting the event. Clearly a record for me (although Froscon comes in as a close second.

Blog!

2011 seems like as good a year as any to start a blog. Until now I’ve resisted the urge to start a blog - while I do have an opinion on most things I’ve never felt that I’d have to publish it. This hasn’t changed. Still I want to give blogging a try - for two reasons: First of all I want to improve my writing - both writing in general and especially in English. The second reason is that I want to have a go at creating an online home for myself. I had registered the domain lank.es in 2008 and have been using it for email for a while now. Time to add a website.
